Dr Dong completed both the ME degree with First Class Honours and the PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Auckland, New Zealand before joining the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Curtin as a lecturer. Roger previously worked as a research associate at Centre for Advanced Composite Materials (CACM) at the University of Auckland and also taught courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels including Advanced Materials Manufacturing, Mechanics of Materials, Engineering Mechanics and Professional Development.
His research interests include processing and material characterisation of polymer nanocomposites, object-oriented finite element (OOF) analysis based on mapping the real morphological structures, multiscale micromechanical modelling with representative volume element (RVE), polymeric process modelling, and statistical design of experiments (DoE).
His presented paper entitled “Characterisation and object-oriented finite element modelling of polypropylene/organoclay nanocomposites” was selected for the Best Paper Silver Award at the 5th Asian-Australasian Conference on Composite Materials (ACCM-5) held in Hong Kong in 2006. In 2007, he was also nominated for “MARQUIS Who’s Who in the World” and for MacDiarmid Young Scientists of the Year Awards, Foundation for Research Science and Technology (FRST), New Zealand. He is currently a selected reviewer for International Journal of Engineering (IJE) and Journal of Nanomaterials.
Dr. Dong has been actively affiliated to several engineering professional bodies as member of American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE), USA and Institute of Nanotechnology (IoN), UK since 2004.
