Areas of Focus
Materials science is an interdisciplinary field that includes elements of applied physics and chemistry, as well as chemical, mechanical, civil and electrical engineering. Leading-edge research in materials science is concerned with developments in areas such as advanced materials and ceramics, nanotechnology, concrete and geopolymer technology.
These are some of the most exciting areas of development in materials science and have enormous potential to impact beneficially both on current industrial processes and at the new horizons in materials research and development.
Operating at all levels of development, from fundamental research through to problem solving for established industries and processes, the Centre’s activities focus on three main areas and their associated projects:
New Materials and Design
- Geopolymers
Materials Performance
- Composite Materials
- Layered and Graded Materials
Materials Characterisation and Modelling
- Electron Microscopy and Microanalysis
- X-ray Characterisation
- Small Angle X-ray Scattering
